What "local" actually means in Albania
Albania's rental market is unlike Western Europe's. International franchises exist mainly at Tirana Airport; everywhere else, the market belongs to hundreds of small licensed companies — often families running ten to forty cars. The owner takes your call, drives the car to your hotel, and shakes your hand at drop-off. Their entire business runs on reputation in one city, which is precisely why the service is personal and the prices are honest.

How a local rental actually works
- Book online or call. Through rentx.al you compare licensed local companies with live prices — no credit card needed.
- The car comes to you. Hotel, apartment, port or airport; delivery is standard practice, free or a small fee.
- Paper contract, walk-around, photos. Photograph every panel together with the owner — locals expect and welcome it.
- Pay how you like. Cash (euros or lek), debit or credit card. Deposit €0–150, usually waived with Full Casco.
- Drop-off is human. The same person collects the car; the deposit comes back on the spot.

How to pick a good local company
Most local companies are excellent; a few are not. The green flags: a registered business name on the contract, insurance documents in the glovebox, recent reviews, and straight answers about the deposit and fuel policy. Requirements and insurance
- Minimum age 21 at most companies; licence held at least one year.
- EU, UK, US, Canadian and Australian licences accepted directly; passport needed for the contract.
- Third-party liability is included by law; basic CDW is standard with a €200–600 excess.
- Full Casco (€5–10/day) zeroes the excess and usually removes the deposit — worth it on Albanian side roads.
- Cross-border trips to Kosovo, North Macedonia and Montenegro need a green card (€20–50); Greece is often restricted.
